• Roam is a small guiding business founded and directed by Tristan Reid. After almost 10 years of professional guiding in the Blue Mountains, Tristan wanted to develop new and exciting programs, exploring less travelled locations with an emphasis on overnight programs, quality equipment, best practices and teaching modern techniques.

All of our staff have been hand picked for their exceptional talent and passion for the outdoors. They bring with them a wealth of experience and unique strengths.

We look forward to announcing additional new programs as the year progresses.

  • Our goal is to give you the most enjoyable experience possible, where safety is paramount. To achieve this we are committed to running only small groups, providing premium equipment, gourmet food and healthy snacks. Our guides are handpicked, with a wealth of experience and they love what they do.

  • Whether it’s a bucket list trip or a technical training course, our group sizes will always be below the maximum allowed. Our maximum size is 8 clients with two guides. Our client to guide ratio will always be 1:4 or under. Our overnight camping trips have a strict 3:1 ratio with a maximum of 6 clients.

  • Roam is committed to the highest levels of safety possible. Our senior staff are some of the most qualified and experienced in the industry. We have detailed safety, training and emergency policies that are followed rigorously. We are taking an active role in advocating for the highest industry standards throughout the industry as well as working with outdoor organizations, political leaders and policy makers to continually improve industry standards.

  • As part of our COVID policy we have chosen to reduce time in enclosed spaces including vehicles to keep everyone safer. However transportation is possible for small groups if you have traveled to the Blue Mountains via public transport. Please contact us or leave a note when booking if you need us to pick you up.

  • We give our clients the best equipment. We have made a significant investment in premium wetsuits, that a lightweight and incredible warm and allow for easier movement. We also provide fully equipped guide style canyon harnesses for our training courses, ultralight camping equipment including ultralight quilts, sleeping mats, 3 season tents, climbing shoes and much more.

  • Due to the higher elevation in the mountains the temperature can be 10 degrees cooler than Sydney. Conditions can change rapidly.

We recommend light synthetic blends or woolen clothing in all seasons expect for hot summer weather.

Thin cotton synthetic blends are good in summer, thicker layers or fleece in the colder seasons, gloves and a spare warm layer for colder conditions winter and a rain jacket for any forecast showers.

For canyoning we recommend running shoes, with good grip, that you are happy to can get wet but still have good grip. Stiff hiking boots are not recommended for canyoning activities.

  • As little as possible, to reduce the amount you will have to carry. Bring any personal medication and a water bottle. We recommend bringing a small bag to leave with the vehicle, with dry shoes, socks and clothes to be changed into after a trip is complete. Valuables and electronics are brought at your own risk, as they can get dropped from heights or water damaged.

  • We cater for all diets, from vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, low carb, allergies, kosher, halal , or simply no onions please. You can select your preferred option when making a booking.

  • Yes! If your child is over 8, and would like to join in the fun of a day of canyoning or climbing we can assist you in choosing a family friendly tour or tailoring a private guided family adventure. Please see our terms and conditions section below, referring to minors.

  • Forecasting the weather is complex in mountain environments. The simple 7 day forecast does not provide a full picture of how conditions will be on the day. We check the forecast every 7 days before a given trip. We will make the final decision 48 hours before a trip. We do not run a trip if we deem conditions to be unsafe. Guides reserve the right to make a judgment call on the day to ensure total safety. See Terms and Conditions below for our cancellation policy and more information.
