WILDERNESS CANYONING INTRO

A wilderness canyoning course teaching you how to plan and complete a wilderness canyoning adventure.

Combining online learning and field instruction you will learn the skills to plan and undertake your own wilderness canyoning adventures. Set off into the canyons of the Wolgan Valley in the Wollemi National Park. Traverse through massive pagoda country with stunning sheer formations, pristine creeks, glow worm caves, green walls and total isolation. The perfect location for your first wilderness canyoning expedition.

Our online session will cover every aspect of planning a wilderness trip from trip parameters, equipment selection, route planning and how to research trip conditions.

The field days will cover hard skills from navigation, “ghosting”, how to fiddlestick, minimal impact techniques, camp selection, self-maintenance and much more. All wilderness camping equipment is fully provided.
A minimum of 3 participants is required.

GRADE: Advanced
FITNESS: Difficult, multiday wilderness bushwalking, canyoning, scrambling DURATION: 2 or 3 nights, 3 days (recommend prior evening arrival)
GUIDE CLIENT RATIO: 1:3, 2:6
MEETING TIME: Suggest prior evening arrival or 06:45 on the day
MEETING LOCATION: Wolgan Valley (Newnes Campground)
EXPECTATIONS: Expeditions are challenging. At times you may experience periods of fatigue, fear, uncertainty or discomfort. There are no home style amenities.

ZOOM SESSION (6-8 weeks prior to trip)

  • “How to plan a Wilderness Canyon” session

  • Trip parameters, researching conditions, gear template, food preparation, route finalization, fitness & skills, systems check

PRIOR EVENING ARRIVAL (recommended):

  • Introductions and greetings

  • Gourmet BBQ and dessert

  • Turn in

DAY 1:

  • 0645 arrival, ready to walk

  • Breakfast, departure

  • Canyon approach, navigation, wilderness canyon rigging and techniques

  • Rope bags, fiddle sticks, efficient movement

  • Bivouac 1, sourcing water, filtration, dry camps, ultralight camp setup

  • Personal maintenance, correct dress, foot care, sleep systems

DAY 2:

  • Breakfast

  • Canyon approach, further skills, rigging, navigation etc

  • Bivouac 2

DAY 3:

  • Breakfast

  • Break camp and return to main campground

  • “Gear reset/dry”, outstanding skills session/questions, gear sort

  • Debrief and lunch

  • Mid/late afternoon departure

INCLUSIONS:

  • Zoom trip planning session, take away gear list

  • Ultralight wilderness equipment (UL tents, sleeping mats, shelter, dining and cooking set up)

  • All canyoning equipment

  • All meals and snacks

  • We do not provide alcohol, footwear, personal clothing or toiletries
